Breath, Eyes, Memory
Oprah Book Club® Selection, May 1998: "I come from a place where breath, eyes and memory are one, a place from which you carry your past like the hair on your head. Where women return to their children as butterflies or as tears in the eyes of the statues that their daughters pray to." The place is Haiti and the speaker is Sophie, the heroine of Edwidge Danticat's novel, "Breath, Eyes, Memory." Like her protagonist, Danticat is also Haitian; like her, she was raised in Haiti by an aunt until she came to the United States at age 12. Indeed, in her short stories, Danticat has often drawn on her background to fund her fiction, and she continues to do so in her debut novel.

revolution|revolisyon|révolution 1804–2004:
An Artistic Commemoration of the Haitian Revolution
Edited by Ella Turenne
Publisher Liv Lakay
With introductions from Edwidge Danticat , Cauvin L. Paul and Max Manigat
Including some of the most celebrated poets and visual artists in the world, revolution|revolisyon|révolution: 1804 – 2004: An Artistic Commemoration of the Haitian Revolution will mark the beginning of a year long celebration of Haiti’s independence.
January 2004 will mark the bicentennial of the Haitian Revolution – one of the most important events in history relating to the struggle for freedom. Proudly garnering its title, “First Black Republic,” Haiti is an example of what results when a collective spirit deems freedom a necessary commodity. Although Haiti’s immediate history has been riddled with turmoil, its history still elicits a sense of great pride amongst its inhabitants as well as those in the Diaspora.
Haiti is well known for its art, and its past has provided ample material for its many celebrated visual artists, poets and playwrights. revolution|revolisyon|révolution looks at this upcoming anniversary through the lens of artists and illustrates creatively the importance and relevance of the emancipation of the slave colony which became Ayiti – Haiti, land of the mountains, the Pearl of the Antilles. The trilingual anthology (English, Kreyol and French) looks to celebrate this accomplishment, as well as communicate the importance of art as means of illustrating and explaining this historic social change movement.
